I cannot promise to stop commenting about the end of summer and the coming autumn. The summer just went by too fast, although I love autumn and all of its vegetables (oh, it's almost time for rutabagas. You're going to try one this year, I Just know it).
Typically on Saturday mornings, I am awakened by the sunshine coming into my window at around 7:30. This morning, however, one little eye crept open to view the weak light showing through, thinking it couldn't be any later than 6:30. It was almost 9!! What if I miss the kale!?
It was the Apple Festival at the North Market today, and so I went there, in search of Honey Crisps. Oh, Honey Crisps. I hesitate to mention how much I love them in fear that everyone else will start to get in on it and then there won't be any left for greedy little me. Alas, no Honey Crisps. They did, however, have apple cider to try. It was nice, but not the cider of my childhood; unpasteurized, fresh from the tree or ground, full of crushed up worms and bugs and seeds and everything. Keeps a kid healthy.
I am completely incapable of passing up Brussels sprouts when sold on the stalk. I am a complete sucker for good packaging, even when invented by Nature. The great thing is that everyone wants to stop you and ask what the heck it is. That is the perfect opportunity to tout the benefits and deliciousness of Brussels sprouts. I will tell anyone who will listen that you steam them for 5 minutes and then toss with bacon! Eat them! They're good! (Click here for the recipe.)
