Yesterday was my birthday! Happy belated birthday to me! That didn't change my Saturday morning routine of heading out to the Worthington Farmer's Market to see what's good this week. We are really getting into late summer, and starting to see fennel, apples, gourds, squash, and pumpkins. All of the fresh flowers are orange and red, and there were heads of "Indian" corn strung up for hanging on doors and the like. I am not quite there yet, not quite ready for the summer to end, but we are in September now, and I guess I should just accept it. I did buy a butternut squash, which I'll be preparing later in the week, but I also bought a watermelon, for dessert when I have the parents over tomorrow.
One of the things I bought yesterday was a basket of rather silly-looking squash, from Mead Farms, the great people who have doggedly been supplying me with all manner of delightful baby squash all summer long. Mr. Mead told me that the squash has a tendency to get all wonky this time of year, with the cool nights and everything. I'm all for wonky squash. You can see my other market finds in my photo album.
