Harvest Celebration at Alana's

If you would like to taste some great local foods prepared by great local chefs, Alana's Food and Wine will be hosting a Harvest Celebration dinner this Sunday night to benefit the Chef-Growers Network.  The event is $75 per person including wine and will feature multiple courses prepared by Tom Smith of the Worthington Inn, Kent Rigsby of Rigsby's Kitchen, David Tetzloff of G. Michael's, Jeni Britton of Jeni's Ice Cream, and others.

WBW - New New World Pinot Noir

Okay, so it's Thursday.  On Thursdays, I happen to have the night off work, making drinking the wine to write about much easier.

I decided to go a little off the beaten path, and stay here in the new world, just a little further south than you might expect for a pinot.  And what do we have?

 

Gruet Brut Rosé.  Hailing from the unlikely state of New Mexico, Gruet produces modestly-priced good sparkling wines (among other things, a traditional Pinot Noir included).  As for the Brut Rosé, produced from 100% pinot noir fruit, it has a medium body with a toasty nose, full of nice red fruits.  It's perfectly paired with dinner preparations, which was how I enjoyed it this evening.  It is a nice sparkling for autumn, being a little heartier than some.  All in all, not a heart-stopping wine, but great for $15.

hahahaha.  I could be standing in a few bars in town on a Friday night with that line.  But I'm too nice (listen hard, and hear my coworkers scoffing).  I was, of course, discussing the beauty of Murray River Salt!  I don't know that I have any hidden agendas or anything, except to try to convince people to buy salt that costs $50 a pound; maybe my hidden agenda is to get people to buy me salt that costs $50 a pound.  Yeah, let's go with that one.  Buy me some salt!!

For those of you looking for really good cider - crisp, tart, autumnal and above all, cloudy and unpasteurized, the folks from Gillogly Orchard have just the thing.  You can find them through the end of the month at the Worthington Farmer's Market (they're at the Northeast corner of the market).  They also have superb Honeycrisps, just for the curious.

If I haven't convinced you to try Weiland's on Saturdays for their BBQ, just look at this picture:

Frozen fries (Alexia brand are really good), a piece of Amish bread to soak up chicken juice goodness, and a side of Weiland's own honey habenero BBQ sauce - yum!  Who needs veggies?

A few of my coworkers expressed a bit of incredulity the other day when they discovered my Saturday morning cat blogging event.  They would have never guessed there was such a thing; I told them that it's a nice sojourn from the norm, and also gives me something to post when I'm busy Saturday mornings and don't have time to write about food.  Also, I am sure there are sites devoted exclusively to pets.  There are, I googleblogsearched them.  Here are a few, just in case you don't believe me: http://www.stuffonmycat.com/; http://newcats.blogspot.com/
