August - Wait, It's August?! - 5th CSA & Market Report
Yes, Lisa, it is August. It's August and things are a-growin'. Am I cheesy today or what? At any rate,
Saturday morning was bright, cool (comparatively) and lovely. No hot rain threatened like last Saturday, the humidity was somewhere down around 95%, the farmers seemed happy, and the heirloom tomatoes are finally, finally starting to show their faces. I have been very bad about cooking at home (or not cooking at home) and tried to keep my purchases light, but of course I failed as usual.
My CSA box this week contained red pearl onions and big onions, lovely heads of head lettuce, bag of mixed greens (which I'm finally eating thanks to salad spinner, even if it warped on its first trip through the top rack of the dishwasher, thanks OXO - you owe me), an eggplant (Husband will be happy), some hot pepper (or not, it looks like a Hungarian Wax Pepper)
unheaded radicchio (too hot to head, I was told), 1/2 dozen eggs, some tiny ears of baby sweet corn, and a small bunch of flowers! Elizabeth Telling Farm rocks. I know you would never speak ill of other CSAs, but my friends with other CSAs are jealous, and they're all jumping ship to you next year.
North Market buys of the week included some edamame (green soybeans) and cranberry beans from Scioto Gardens (at the North Market this year, but at Worthington last year), shitakes from Toby Run Growers and some freshly milled whole white wheat flower from Quiver Full farms, which I intend to use wisely as soon as possible.
At the Worthington Market, I was sure to stop by Gillogly Orchard for more of their fabulous white
nectarines and a half pint of giant blackberries - can you believe those? Ms. Gillogly will forever be my hero for chastising folks trying to cut in line, whether intentionally or not. Line cutters have been a particular pet peeve of mine as of late - it's just something I don't understand. What does a grown man get out of literally elbowing me out of his way so that he can buy green beans one person in front of me? Okay, diatribe over... It's a good thing I stocked up on potatoes 2 weeks ago, since the folks from Arbor Hill Organics seem to be away on vacation these last 2 Saturdays. I see some French potato salad in my future. I also bought some wildly hot little chiles, some tomatoes, a watermelon, green beans, and finally! some red bell peppers. I really have to catch up on the names of the new farmers who are out this year, since all websites seem a little lax in updating their listings. For better or worse, the markets have been
so crowded this year that my usual habit of taking notes as I go has gone by the wayside. Just another reason for my super cool digital voice recording spy pen I've had my eye on. I'll have to get Husband on that. I do have a birthday coming up, after all . . .
So what's coming up for the next week? I have a few recipes to share, for once (I know, it's shocking), and will hopefully be doing more cooking. I know I should be working on some new reviews for you, dear readers, but I've been working every day and haven't had a chance to visit Alana's in awhile so I'm guessing we'll be spending our Thursday there, as used to be our custom, and I'll probably document that in photographs at least. Plus I have a little photo album of Risby's bar snacks to share, and maybe a few other things. I did receive a quarterly deposit from my Amazon associate account in the whopping amount of $16. Since I have promised that all money received will go for the site, I will have to see how to spend it the most wisely, and I'll be sure to keep you posted.
