Things to do in Columbus, April 12th Edition
It's going to be another cold weekend here in Columbus - 39 on Saturday, and a balmy 43 degrees on Sunday. It looks as though we'll finally get above the 50s next weekend. Ah, well, it is Columbus, after all, can we really be surprised?
Here are some Columbus events to enjoy this weekend and beyond. Be sure to revisit last week's list, as some events are ongoing:
- I'll say it again: if the weather's got you down, I highly recommend a trip to Franklin Park Conservatory. I always recommend a trip there, but right now you can enjoy Blooms & Butterflies, the annual butterfly exhibit. It makes a great date (boys, listen up!) and kids enjoy it, too. You can see the entire life cycle of the lepidoptera, including an extensive incubator, where one could sit and stare at the butterflies emerging from their chrysalides and drying their wings for hours. The exhibit is open Tuesday through Sunday 10am - 5pm, with Wednesdays having hours extended to 8pm. New butterflies are released daily at 1pm. 1777 E. Broad Street.
- Did you know this weekend is Laotian New Year? And there is a festival to celebrate it? This weekend at Wat Lao Buddhamamakaram, aka the Laotian Buddhist temple, 3624 Bexvie Ave (east side). There will be food, demonstrations of traditional dance and dress, and vendors selling Laotian souvenirs. There's no website, so let's just say it is Saturday and Sunday during the day. The owner of Indochine told me about the festival, so I'd imagine you could call for more details 614.231.7357. I have never been to a Buddhist temple, nor a Laotian new year festival, so I just might check it out on Sunday.
- If you need to inject some art into your life, you might find the Optic Nerve exhibit at the Columbus Museum of Art worth checking out. It features "perceptual" art of the 60s. The exhibit continues through June 17th. The Columbus Museum of Art is open Tuesday - Sunday 10:30 - 5:30, with extended hours on Thursdays (to 8:30). There is a guided tour of this exhibit today (Thursday, April 12th) at 6:30pm.
- This weekend is the four-day Campus Music Hop, centering around the Ohio State Jazz Festival. Live music will be featured at many locations throughout the University District. Click for more details including a schedule of events.
- If you've been taking too much of my advice and eating a little too much lately, you might be interested in checking out the Health & Fitness Expo at the Hyatt Regency (Arena District), which will coincided with the Columbus half marathon (go Chef!!). The event takes place this Saturday & Sunday.
- If you'd like a little color during this gray and rainy weekend, here's another event at Franklin Park Conservatory: the Daffodil Society Show. There will be all sorts of blooms to cheer you up. The event will take place Saturday 1:30 - 5pm, Sunday 10:30am - 5pm.
Well, I've given you a few things to do this weekend. Get out there and enjoy the weather! Or at least enjoy the lengthened fireplace season.
