Update - I have added a few events thanks to e-mails, feel free to keep e-mailing me if you even isn't listed.
It's getting warmer every day. You know that feeling - early in the year, before you turn on the air conditioning, you have all the windows open, and the house is still cool but warm breezes are floating through? It's one of my favorite feelings in the world. I've been enjoying it a lot this week. Have I mentioned I love this time of year? There was a time in my life when I loved gray, rainy days more than anything else (back in my listening to a lot of Cure days), but the older I get, the more I love the sunshine and a warm breeze. All of this to say, spend some time outside this week! Or, enjoy some of these Columbus events:
- Celebrate Cinco de May a day early on the riverfront. The Cinco de Mayo Festival and Parade will take place Friday, beginning from 10:45am - 10pm at Bicentenniel Park (Downtown Columbus). This is a family-friendly event with lots of activities for kids (pinata-making) and adults (tequila tasting). Have fun and learn something while you are at it.
- Saturday is Cinco d'Ohio at the North Market. It's the first outdoor event for the market this year and the official opening of the farm market, and the day will be full of cooking and grilling demonstrations, as well as culinary competitions. OhioProud vendors will also be on hand, serving up Ohio-made products.
- Anyone with an interest in art or quilting should take in the "Education and the Quiltmaker" exhibit this week at the Riffe Center (77 S. High St, Downtown.) The exhibit will showcase how the teacher influences the work of the student, and how the student's work, in turn, reflects in the future works of the teacher. Sounds interesting, and these types of art quilts are usually stunning to behold. Today through Sunday, admission is free.
- Of course, this Saturday is the Gallery Hop in the Short North, and the weather is shaping up to be beautiful (of course, that could all change in an instant). Come stroll through the galleries, buy some art, and stop into your favorite watering hole for some refreshment. This month, I am recommending my old favorite, the Burgundy Room, even if they have an outdate website (a pet peeve of mine). It's the perfect weather for a nice alborino or rosé. Get there early and park in a parking garage, hit Cinco d'Ohio and stay all day!
- Fans of unique theater might appreciate MadLab's Theatre Roulette, which features various short plays on various nights, so you could go 2-3 days and see different plays each time. Performances take place May 3rd - 26th Thursday - Saturdays at 8pm, and tickets are only $12, so get off the couch and get some culture! There are also late night shows the next 2 Saturdays for $5. 105 N. Grant Ave downtown.
- For those of you who love antiques and live closer to Powell than I do, check out Sunday's Powel Antique Street Market, 9am - 5pm throughout Powell. It's been a really long time since I was through downtown Powell, and I'm sure it's grown since I was out thattaway.
- The Underground Railroad series at the Kelton House continues this Sunday noon - 5pm. Admission is $5.
- For those of you who appreciate a good joust, this Saturday is the Annual Renaissance Faire: The Jewel and the Nightingale from 11am until 6pm, on the South Oval at Mirror Late (12th ave and College, on the OSU campus). There will be performers, dancing, and food - one would hope they have a turkey leg vendor. No word on weather or not the goodly meade will be served. Admission is free!
If you have any other events you'd like me to add, please e-mail me. I hope you get out and enjoy some of the great things Columbus has to offer. Then feel free and let me know how it went. Enjoy some sunshine for me - I'll be at work.
