It's warm and sunny outside. It's hard to be indoors, surfing the internets, but for you, my dear readers, I am sacrificing to find things for you to do. Just kidding - it is, of course, a pleasure to highlight what Columbus has to offer. As always, if you have an event you'd like to see listed, please email me and I will happily add it.
- Listen up boys: (I know you girls remember) THIS SUNDAY IS MOTHER's DAY. Don't say I didn't warn you.
- First of all, Cirque du Soleil is in town until June 10th. I won't go in to my disappointment that it isn't in the Arena District this year - I loved seeing Le Grand Chapiteau when driving past, but oh well. For those of you who have never been to Cirque du Soleil, I highly recommend it. Especially if you've been looking for some inspiration to get into shape. Tickets range from $28 for children to $75. This year, the big top is located at 717 E 17th St (aka the Fairgrounds), call 800-678-5440 for ticket information.
- This Saturday is the first Worthington Farmer's Market! It is also the annual plant sale, the perfect opportunity to pick up some heirloom tomato plants that are already flowering (I'm a big proponent of instant gratification). Ohio asparagus is here, so this is a good week for you asparagus lovers to get out there and load up!
- It's your second chance of the season to check out The Ohio Roller Girls this Saturday. Click here for ticket information. Games (matches?) take place in the Lausche Building at the Ohio Expo Center (aka Fairgrounds) at 7pm.
- NPR nerds like me might be interested in seeing Senior News Correspondent Juan Williams speak May 15th (Tuesday) at the Hillel Center on Campus (46 E 16th St). The event is free but tickets are required, and they can be yours by calling 614-294-4797.
- Civil War nerds like Husband can see a Civil War Encampment on the Ohio Statehouse lawn (State and High, I'm sure it will hard to miss) this Friday and Saturday. You can learn how to fire a cannon, dress a wound in the field, and combat disease, and see the types of food consumed on the march; mmm, wormy hard tack.
- Of course, Blooms & Butterflies is ongoing at Franklin Park Conservatory, but this Saturday noon-2pm you can help build a butterfly mural out of found materials. This event is for children 4 and up with adult companions, and sounds like it would be a lot of fun for those of you with energetic kiddos who need a creative outlet.
- This Saturday is the Ohio Short Film & Video Showcase at the Wexner Center. This event highlights short films from all parts of the state. Youth showcase takes place at 4:30pm, and the adult is at 7.
- Treat mom to tea at the Longaberger Homestead this weekend. Tickets are $16.50, call 740-322-5588.
- You can also treat mom to a brunch at the Ohio Historical Society on Sunday, which will feature foods from the White House Cookbook; there is also a "First Ladies" exhibit, so you can enjoy both. Tickets are $30, call 614-297-2666.
- And of course, in events Next Week, the North Market will host their annual Apron Gala! Get out your cutest apron and show it off next Saturday, May 19th, 7-10pm. The event will feature loads of food, and auction, and general foodiness. This year will be the first time I get to experience the whole event and I am very excited. Tickets are $75. I'll see you there!
- Also next Saturday is the German Village Garage Sale. For any of you recent grads out there looking to furnish your brand new apartment for cheap, this is the place for you. The event takes place throughout the village, beginning at 8 am.
