CSA & Market Report for June 9th
Each week, I document what I receive in my CSA box and what I purchase at Columbus' farm markets. If you have questions about what a CSA is, please click here. For lists of my market reports since 2005, please click here.
It was cool and sunny this morning; a welcome break after yesterday's stifling heat and humidity. We need rain! All day yesterday it threatened rain, but none came. My CSA farmer, Sandy, of Elizabeth Telling Farm, told me she finally got 1/2 inch of rain yesterday, meaning the squash can be planted. I hit Worthington Farmer's market first, where I was so early many people were still setting up. I had a mindset this morning for two things only: strawberries and sugar snap peas, so I didn't mind missing a few farms. I took High street all the way to the Short North and parked on the cap so I could get a little exercise in my morning. I shopped through the market, I bought some not-quite-in-season around here, shipped in Ranier cherries because I love them dearly, and I went outside to enjoy my pho. From the looks of things, the Park Street Festival has been hopping - I heard a few workers say they were still selling food at 3am. If you can face the crowds of pretty people, you might want to head down tonight. It's a great day to be outside!
But away with the musing and on with the report! My CSA box (above) this week included mixed salad greens (including the amusingly-named "devil's ear" lettuce), a bag of braising greens - mustard, chard, etc - a little box of strawberries, some snow peas, and my yummy eggs. Eggs are very difficult to photograph. I can't even begin to tell you how many pictures of beautiful eggs I've tried to photograph for you, and they rarely turn out.
Also from the North Market, I bought red currants (top of post)! dill, squash blossoms (below)! and curly endive from Combs herbs:
This week, I had to buy an entire pound of shitake mushrooms from Toby Run mushrooms. Since it's sugar snap pea season, I just had to have an extra box of shroomies for the week.
From the Worthington Farmer's Market, I bought some red popcorn, loads of sugar snap peas, and green garlic (above) from Pop & Judy's farm - this is probably the last week for rhubarb - might have some next week, might not.
I also bought some maple sugar and granola from Pleiades Maple products, some ribeyes from Up the Lane cattle. Four quarts of strawberries, some broccoli and grape tomatoes from Wishwell Farms. I did make it once this week to the Pearl Alley market, but there weren't very many farmers out. Hopefully over the next few weeks, they'll start coming out a bit more. Get out there and see all of the local products our great city has to offer!
