If you can manage to dig yourself out of the snow today, there are a few fun things to do this week. It's almost as thought we in the holiday season, for a change (for those of you not in Central Ohio, we here in Columbus tend to not see snow until after the New Year, and then randomly throughout the Spring, as you might recall of you're a longtime reader - 2005, 2007). So, although this snow will probably melt before the weekend, turning the streets into rivers of black sludge, and by next week it will be in the 50s again, for the time being, you can at least get into the holiday spirit a little bit.
As always, if you have an event you would like to add, please leave it in the comments or email it to me and I will add it to the list.
- First up, this Saturday is the CCAD Holiday Student Art Sale. I went to the spring show, and it was really great. For those of you looking to infuse youre life with a little more art, this is a great way to do it, while supporting young artists. There is something for everyone - from glass to jewelry to giant, sofa-sized paintings. It is amazing what these students produce. You might remember that last time, I bought some cool Japanese-style paintings. You can pay $50 to go early, from 8am - 10am; general admission is $5 after 10. This is also a great way to buy locally-produced gifts for your friends for the holidays; and besides, you do know that Columbus is the indie art capital of the world, don't you?
- Speaking of buying some local art for the holidays, this weekend is the Glass Axis Holiday sale - you can even make your own blown glass ornament each day of the sale from noon-5pm for $25. You can also purchase lots of great handmade glass items.
- For all of you Columbus Undergrounders, there will be another one of those fabulous CU Happy Hours tomorrow which I won't be able to attend. This month's edition takes place at Oldfield's on High.
- There are quite a few things going on at one of my favorite places in Columbus, the Franklin Park Conservatory - first of all, there are lots of gingerbread houses on display, there is the Enchanted Express, and for three Wednesdays in December, the gardens will be alight with candles, and you can even have a romantic dinner in the Palm house.
- Well, I finally had a chance to go to Shadowbox Caberet at Easton, and it was loads of fun. I saw Hair, and I can't wait to get back for Holiday Hoopla, which runs through January 13th and features lots of original sketch comedy. I'm sure it will be highly entertaining.
- This Sunday is Holiday Lights in German Village - there will be thousands of luminaries lining the streets and you can stroll around, dine in the great German Village restaurants, shop the shops, and enjoy some hot cider. It's free, so it would be a nice and cheap romantic date, boys.
- The Ohio Craft Museum will feature handmade crafts throughout the month of December, so yet another opportunity to buy from local craftspeople. The sale hours are M-F 10am - 5pm and Sat & Sun 1p - 4pm.
- Get into the Christmas spirit this weekend with the Columbus Gay Mens Chorus, who will perform Joy! a seclection of holiday classics and new arrangements at the King Ave Methodist Church. Shows are Friday and Saturday, with a bonus matinee on Saturday.
- And, if you'd like to get some church in your holiday season without all of that preaching, you can join the Columbus Landmarks for a candlelit tour of Columbus' historic churches this Sunday evening. Each stop will feature seasonal music.
- Of course, Wildlights at the Zoo is ongoing. I always love going to this event, even though I spend most of the time in serious contemplation over whether or not the animals seem happy.
