Things to do in Columbus::June 4th Edition

If it doesn't stop raining, we are going to have a jungle in our back yard.  I suppose I shouldn't complain, seeing as only a few years ago, we didn't even have grass.  Actually, I enjoy the rain, and even now am sitting here with the dining room doors open, enjoying the aroma of summer rain.

This is a busy week here in Central Ohio, and I hope you all get out there and experience what the city has to offer!  As always, please let me know what I am missint!

  • The first event on the list is mine!  That's a first for me!  Sunday night, in the Dispatch Kitchen at the North Market, I will be having my very first RW Sunday Supper.  It will feature yummy local food and some education, but nothing too crazy.  Canapes and 4 courses will be paired with great wines!  (I just opened a few more spots - I'd love it if 5 more people signed up, click for more info).
  • Tomorrow night is another Slow Foods event (I promise I'll make it to one one of these days!).  This one will take place at the Refectory and the theme is The French Country meets Ohio Countryside.  Click over to their website for further details.
  • The downtown Pearl Market opened this week, with a ceremony which included the mayor.
ThumbpearlmarketThere were lots of disputes which don't interest me, so I'm not sure why the separation happened with the old Pearl Alley grower's association, but the market is now being run by different people, will include a lot more prepared foods, and is still open Tuesdays & Fridays 10:30a - 2p.  I couldn't go to the opening day because I was working, but there is a thread about it on Columbus Underground.  I love the fact that Global Gallery was there selling coffee - it's things like that which will make the market a destination.  More info on the Pearl Market.
  • This Saturday is the Gallery Hop in the Short North.  If you are new to Columbus, the Gallery Hop is a great chance to see fun things the city has to offer; find a good place to park and stroll through the galleries, shops, restaurants and bars.  A few of my favorite places to lose money are the Cookware Sorcerer (I bought my brand new chef coat for my RW Supper there!) and On Paper (they helped me with my fabulous business cards, and then Husband and a few of our friends have since bought their cards there, as well).  I am a complete sucker for paper products.  I also love Rivet Gallery, for art galleries.
  • Speaking of Gallery Hop and the Short North, this weekend is Hope Weekend for Rachel Widomski.  There are lots of events going on and a tip drive, so if you see a tip jar in a Short North restaurant this weekend, leave money.  There are some great big donors who are matching or adding to the contributions.  I will probably post a larger list of Hope Weekend events tomorrow.
  • This week is the Columbus Arts Festival downtown on the riverfront!  I haven't gone in recent years, but we always went when I was a kid and I remember loving it, so take the kiddos!
  • The CAPA Summer Music Series kicks off this weekend with the James Bond classic, Thunderball; next Wednesday will be Sabrina.  Who doesn't love going to the Ohio Theatre to see a movie?  It's one of my favorite places in Columbus.
  • The North Market's Chef series continues this week; tonight's class features John Skaggs, and Saturday morning you can shop with a chef (Johnny Dornback) and have a lunch after!
  • Tomorrow night at the Wexner Center, Jeff Smith will present and discuss a few of his favorite Looney Toons cartoons!  Fun for everyone!  Click to their site for more events as well as summer workshops for the kiddos.

The riverfront is all torn up while they're working on the Scioto Mile. The festivals are supposed to come back when they are done.

FYI, the Columbus Arts Festival has been moved this year. Apparently it's now over by CCAD, which makes me a little sad. I always liked walking down the riverfront.
