Things to do in Columbus::August 6th Edition
So, Lisa, how's your staycation going? Well, I was going to go to Inniswood today, but it rained. And then, I had a very, very rare inspiration to clean and throw things away. As I might have mentioned, this is an extremely rare occurence, and when it happens, I have to heed it.
But we aren't talking about my cleaning, are we? let's talk about all the fun things there are to do in our fair city this week. As always, if I have missed anything, please put it in the comments!
- First up, Franklin Park Conservatory will debut a new permanent exhibit by lighting artist James Turrell. The exhibit will involve changing lights in the Palm house, and the grand lighting will take place this Friday at 8:15. You can take chairs and blankets and have a romantic picnic at the park, see the exhibit lighting, and then tour the Palm House all evening. There will music and a cash bar. Talk about a fantastic - and fantastically free (or cheap) - date! Listen up boys! I'm trying to help you here!
- Well! I just learned what "tole painting" is. Traditionally, it's painting on tin! I've always wondered. If you have, too, or would like to see other tole painters or paint your own tole, this weekend is the time to do it! The Heart of Ohio Tole Painters will have their convention next weeked at the convention center.
- This Sunday, you can see the patrons of Shadowbox doing their best to perform like their favorite Shadowboxers. I have a confession to make. I've always wanted to play "Mama" in Chicago. Maybe one day.
- I just love the Wexner Center, don't you? I think it's one of our city's greatest treasures. They were nice enough to invite us to their fall preview party and the Waitress household has decided to become members. I'm trying to get more art into my life. At any rate, the Kubrick retrospective continues tomorrow night with another double feature - Full Metal Jacket & Killer's Kiss.
- If you didn't get your fill of Ted Nugent this week with No Reservations, you can catch him at the Ohio State Fair this Thursday. And no, I won't be attending the fair this year. I am really sorry to those of you who wanted me to cover the food at the fair but I don't like crowds, being outside in the blazing sun when it's over 85 degrees, and well, my waistline really can't handle anything fried at the moment.
- This Saturday is Waterfire on the Mile at the Riverfront ampitheater. Another free date boys!
- Today through Friday, you can see free open rehearsals as BalletMet prepares for their fist show of the year.
- Beginning tomorrow and continuing through the month of August, Actors' Theatre group will present Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac. This is the last of the plays for the season, so if you've been putting it off, now's your chance. Yet another free date! Stop by Brown Bag, buy a picnic, and walk over to the park.
- This Friday, Music in the Air presents Horton Hears a Who at the Riverfront ampitheater.
- Sunday, the Jazz in the Air series continues at Goodale park with Actual Proof and Jeanette Williams (funky jazz).
- and Tuesday at the Topiary Park, Vocal Impact (soulful harmonies) will perform.
- This week at Sur la Table, you can learn: Sushi 101 (thurs), Ultimate Surf & Turf (Fri), No Bake Desserts (Sat), Summer Pasta (Mon), Essential Knife Skills (Tues), and Al Fresco Dinners (Wed).

Re: fair food. It's going to be in the 70s this weekend! Perfect fair weather :)
We went last night and sampled. The bbq lamb sandwich at the Taste Of Ohio pavilion was marvelous. Just shredded lamb on a bun - delicate, moist, bursting with flavor.
You could compare sweet corn preparations: some boil, some roast on a grill, and one of the big bbq places (racks of meat on grills) had a corn roasting machine that took the ears on a ride through a giant metal roaster.
Also - apple dumplings were AMAZING. And there was a place making whole wheat elephant ears from freshly ground flour - topped with home made raspberry jam! Stunningly good.
I didn't have the courage to try deep fried fudge, though. Yikes!

Just a quick correction - Ted Nugent is playing the fair on Saturday, not Thursday. :)
