I can't believe I nearly forgot this event, which was going to be a major focus of this Sunday's Supper. I am guessing a lot of people don't realize that there are actually quite a few shrimp farms in Ohio. These shrimp taste a little different from salt water shrimp - I think they taste a lot like crawfish or lobster. I had some last year from the Hocking College aquaculture school, and they were amazing. I plan to buy a lot this year and freeze them throughout the year.
There is a very brief period where you can buy live, local shrimp, because there is one major crop, and when the waters begin to cool in the late summer, the shrimp are harvested.
At any rate, this weekend is the Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival at Freshwater Farms of Ohio in Urbana. The event features shrimp from several Ohio shrimp farms. You can also eat lots of yummy trout products from Freshwater, and stop by the stugeon petting zoo.
