Winter!! Farm Market Report for January 24th!

So, this morning I awoke at the crack of 9am, in perfect time to make it to the winter farmer's markets!  I headed to Clintonville first, where there were lots of baked goods, including these amazing, and I mean amazing springerle cookies from Belle's Kitchen.  How could I help buy be inspired to document them photographically?  Here's something very interesting about these cookies - which, aside from being incredibly beautiful, are also delcious with a wonderful anise flavor - my foster kitty loved these.  He went crazy for the aroma and stood on his hind legs to try to grab my cookie out of my hand!!  Speaking of hands, look at the second cookie picture, and the little heart in the hand.  These would make a lovely gift or wedding favor!

I also bought some radishes, apples for sauce-making, yummy salty goat's milk feta, and short ribs.  I was encouraged to see that a lot of people were shopping; as I left, there were lots of people coming in.  

It was still early, and there were no eggs to be found this week at the Clintonville market, so I decided to head to Worthington, where it was Crowded.  Yikes.  Attention to the organizers - please do something about the traffic flow; it bottlenecks in the hallway.  At any rate, I was excited to see some of my favorite farmers there, such as Up the Lane Cattle, where I bought some shanks (mmmmmmarrow!) and some tails!  I also picked up some eggs from Speckled Hens Farms, some alfalfa sprouts (what a great idea! I've rarely see sprouts at the market!) and some snow peas and scallions from a farm whose name, alas, I negleted to notice.  I was just so excited to be shopping for local produce again, even if it was grown in a greenhouse!  Today I plan to make my first local salad in months.
